Dr. Mike Amaranthus Dr. Amaranthus has published over 80 scientific papers and has conducted research and presented invited scientific papers in England, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, China, Mexico and Canada. He has addressed major policy and decision makers including US Senators, Interior Secretary, and numerous regulatory agencies. Dr. Amaranthus has been featured in major national and international television programs such as “Nature National Geographic” and, most recently, the “Modern Marvels” program. He is one of 7 featured scientists in the "Web of Life", a PBS program on biodiversity broadcast in 43 countries, and has been quoted in national publications including the New York Times, Newsweek, Worldwatch, and Smithsonian Magazine.
David Anderson Graduating with a degree in Forestry during the Federal hiring freeze in 1982, David was fortunate to find his way into arboriculture at Sohner Tree Service in Marin County, CA. Since joining Bartlett Tree Experts in 1987, he has worked as a Crew Leader, Production Supervisor and currently serves as a Western Division Safety and Training Coordinator.
Dr. John Ball John Ball is a Professor of Forestry from South Dakota State University where he instructs courses in arboriculture and forestry along with a research program in arboriculture safety. He also serves as the campus arborists and leads the tree care and removal operations. Previously he worked as a manager at tree care companies in Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Michigan.
Christine Esposito Christine Esposito is president of Terracom Public Relations, an award-winning firm in Chicago. Since 1990, Terracom has helped green organizations grow in size and impact through strategic PR and marketing communications. The Care of Trees, the Illinois Arborist Association and a variety of landscape firms are included among Christine’s clients.
Norm Hall Norm Hall is a trainer for The Care of Trees and has been employed there since 1969. He has worked with truck mounted cranes since 1987. Norm is co-inventor of the Port-a-wrap™ and shares two patents with his partner.
Ed Hayes Ed earned his B.S. in Forest Management in 1975 and his M.S. in Plant Protection in 1976 from Virginia Tech. Ed has over 30 years of field experience in forest and shade tree health. He has conducted seminars and workshops on tree risk assessment worldwide. Ed is author and publisher of the field guide Evaluating Tree Defects, second edition.
As general manager of The Davey Institute, Greg is responsible for research and laboratories, technical services, education and training, environmental programs, and the new ventures/development group. He holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Kent State University, where he specialized in geographic information systems. Greg began his Davey career in 1995 as a GIS intern and previously was manager of GIS/IT for Davey Resource Group. He has most recently been involved with a number of projects with the USDA’s Forest Service and spearheaded Davey's involvement in an industry-wide urban forestry initiative following Hurricane Katrina.
Sam Kezar Sam Kezar is an aerial rescue specialist with North American Training Solutions. He brings valuable knowledge and experience to the tree care industry in the areas of safety, aerial rescue and emergency response. Sam is a teaching specialist at the University of Minnesota – Crookston where he educates students in the areas of arboriculture and Urban Forestry.
Brian Kraff Brian Kraff, CEO was a part of the group of marketing experts who developed the pay-per-click model of Web marketing in 1996, the pay-per-lead model in 1997, and has been at the forefront of getting customers from the Web ever since. Prior to founding Market Hardware in 2002, Brian was the founder and CEO of eStudentLoan, the world's largest comparison marketplace for student loans, which partnered with national lenders such as Citibank, American Express, and Bank of America to serve over one million users. eStudentLoan won numerous "Best of the Web" awards from Forbes, PC Novice Magazine, and Online Banking Report. Brian has a B.A. from Cornell University and a Masters in Business Administration in Finance from Columbia Business School, where he focused on Managing New Ventures.
Guy Meilleur Guy Meilleur (May-er’) is an ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist, Municipal Specialist, Utility Specialist, and Certified Tree Worker. He is a former Instructor at Duke and Virginia Tech Universities.
Dr. Frederic Miller Dr. Frederick Miller is a Professor of Horticulture in the Department of Horticulture at Joliet Junior College, Joliet, Illinois. He is also a Research Associate – Entomology at the Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL. Dr. Miller’s research focuses on insect and mite pests of woody landscape plants and host plant resistance of elms, lindens, maples and oaks for leaf-feeding pests. He received his Ph.D. in horticultural entomology from Iowa State University, M. Sc. in forest entomology from the University of Arkansas, and a B.S.F. in forest management from the University of Missouri. He is actively involved with the Illinois Arborist Association (IAA) and the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Dr. Miller is a Board Certified Master Arborist (BCMA).
Gil Niedenthal Gil Niedenthal is the Director and Corporate Safety Officer for Asplundh Tree Expert Co. and all subsidiaries. Gil has over twenty years experience as a safety professional having worked in ship building, manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, and prior to Asplundh within the electric utility industry in St. Louis, Missouri. Gil is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, served as an Officer in the Navy and holds a Master's Degree in Occupational Safety. Gil is a Certified Safety Professional and Certified Industrial Hygienist and is an active member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the National Safety Council.
Dr. Sherry Perdue Dr. Perdue earned her Ph.D. and M.S. from Virginia Tech in industrial and systems engineering with a concentration in human factors engineering and ergonomics. As a co-founder and Senior Partner of Safety Performance Solutions, Sherry has worked for over 15 years to assist organizations with understanding and implementing people-based safety management principles, including behavioral observation and feedback processes, incident investigation processes, safety incentive and recognition programs, safety performance measurement systems, and safety accountability systems.
Danny Raines Danny started as a Helper on a line crew in June 1967 in Macon, Georgia and successfully worked through all classifications to a Crew Leader on Line Crew. He was promoted to First Line Supervisor in 1985, moved to Contract Managements in 1995 and back to Safety in Health in 1997. Danny worked as a Safety Advisor, Safety Supervisor, Safety Project Manager and retired as a Corporate Safety Consultant for Distribution and Transmission in Atlanta for Georgia Power Company on December 1, 2007. He currently resides in the Metro Atlanta area.
Dr. Michael J. Raupp Dr. Raupp is an Entomology Professor and Extension Specialist at the University of Maryland at College Park. He holds advanced degrees from Rutgers University and the University of Maryland. Mike has published more than 150 articles including refereed articles, book chapters, extension publications, and lay articles. He has presented more than 600 invitational talks in the U.S. and abroad on the ecology and management of insect and mite pests in landscapes, and has received regional and national awards for excellence in extension. He is a regular guest on national radio and television and conducts workshops, shortcourses, and conferences for members of the green industries.
Andrew has 20+ years of field and management experience in occupational safety and health and risk management. As a graduate of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Safety Sciences program in 1985, a board certified safety professional since 1994 and Certified Treecare Safety Professional since 2006, Andrew has dedicated his career to the protection of people, property and the environment. Andrew currently serves on the ANSI Accredited Standards Committee Z133 for Arboriculture Safe Work Practices, is a member of the Utility Arborist Association and is a past president and current delegate for the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Dr. David Shetlar Dr. David Shetlar is an Associate Professor of Urban Landscape Entomology at Ohio State University. Dr. Shetlar earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma and his Doctorate in Entomology from Penn State. He was a professor at Penn State from 1977 to 1983, a Research Scientist with Chemlawn Services from 1984 to 1990 and he joined Ohio State in May, 1990. He recently coauthored the book, Destructive Turf Insects, second edition with Dr. Harry Niemczyk and was one of the recipients of an Annual Leadership Award presented by Lawn and Landscape and Bayer in 2005.
Dr. Tom Smiley Tom Smiley is an arboricultural researcher at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory in Charlotte NC and an adjunct professor of Urban Forestry at Clemson University. Tom received his Ph.D. in Urban Forestry from Michigan State University, and a M.S. in Plant Pathology from Colorado State University.
Dr. Kevin T. Smith Dr. Smith’s formal education is in Botany and Plant Pathology with degrees from Connecticut College, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Georgia. As a graduate student in 1977, he began working to understand the response of trees to injury and infection in the research lab of Dr. Alex Shigo in Durham, NH. In 2000, he became Project Leader of that lab. Dr. Smith has authored more than 75 articles, book chapters and scientific papers and has received awards for Distinguished Research by the US Forest Service. He is an affiliate Professor of Plant Biology at the University of New Hampshire.
Randall Stamen Randy is an ISA Certified Arborist and an attorney. He received his B.A. from the University of California - Irvine and his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. Randy’s law firm, The Law Offices of Randall S. Stamen, is located in Riverside, California. A great deal of Randy’s practice involves risk management and litigation in the arboriculture industry. Randy’s typical cases involve trees which kill and injure people, arboriculture malpractice, wrongful removal of trees, encroachment disputes and view disputes. He has represented hundreds of arborists, individuals, property owners, public entities and homeowners’ associations over the past 14 years, and is the author of California Arboriculture Law, a book about tree-related lawsuits and laws. He is also the author of numerous articles on risk management and arboriculture liability. Randy lectures throughout the U.S. on risk management and arboriculture liability.

Dr. Christina Wells Dr. Wells received her B.S. in Biology from Temple University, her Ph. D. in Plant Physiology from Penn State, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Root Physiology from the University of Nevada. She currently serves as Associate Professor of Horticulture at Clemson University, where her research focuses on root health in urban trees. Dr. Wells teaches tree physiology to both undergraduate and graduate students and has led an urban forestry study-abroad program in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Chris Williamson Dr. R. Chris Williamson is an Associate Professor of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he is an extension (70%) research (30%) entomologist in urban landscape entomology including turfgrass (golf courses, lawns, athletic fields and sod farms), ornamentals (nursery and landscape), Christmas trees and greenhouses.
Don Zimar Don Zimar, the founder and President of Zimar & Associates, an arboricultural consulting firm in Manassas, VA, holds many credentials in arboriculture and forestry, including Certified Forester and Registered Consulting Arborist. He is a Certified Arborist and a Registered Professional Forester with undergraduate degrees in forestry, natural resources management, and forest technology from Syracuse University and The State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Shortly after graduating from college, he began consulting for a major nationwide firm before building and managing one of the largest divisions of one of the largest private arboricultural companies in the country while concurrently starting and building a consulting division in the D.C. metropolitan area. He has consulted with various public agencies including the National Park Service, Maryland State Highway Administration, NASA, and the FBI. |
